DIA Mounts Recruitment Campaign to Attract New Volunteers
The DIA is looking for a few good men and women-actually fifty-in anticipation of the increased demand for museum school tours, visits to area classrooms, and requests by adult community groups for talks when the entire museum reopens in 2007.
The volunteers, who give tours, talk about the art in the galleries and in the community, and visit schools, must complete a comprehensive nine-month training program that includes art history, presentation techniques, and interpretive skill building. The commitment is significant, but the rewards are many and varied, including opportunities for personal growth and enrichment, making new friends, and giving back to the community.
Training begins in September 2006 and runs through May 2007 for three volunteer positions: Docents (museum guides), who provide tours and presentations to children and adults; Art to the Schools speakers, who visit third- to sixth-grade classrooms in metro-area schools; and Speakers Bureau members, who give talks to adult community groups. The year's training program includes Thursday and Saturday sessions to accommodate varying schedules. A background in art is not required.
