Special Thanksgiving Weekend Fun for All Ages at the Detroit Institute of Arts
National Puppet Theater, live music, drop-in workshops highlight activities
From out of town guests to hometown tourists, to restless kids on a break from school, the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is the place to be this Thanksgiving weekend. Gobble up some great art, food, music, special family performances and shop-till-you-drop in two museum stores.
The main attraction for kids of all ages is the puppet show Out of the Mist…A Dragon, performed by national touring company Wood and Strings Theatre. This original story is a tale of magic and adventure about a young man’s journey of self-discovery, told with classic puppet styles from around the world. Following the performance, the puppeteers describe the traditional folk puppets used, including elegant reproductions of Bunraku puppets from Japan and traditional puppets from Indonesia and North America. Performances are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 24 and 25 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 26 at noon. Tickets are $4 for DIA members, $5 for non-members, and free for children two and younger. Tickets are available online at dia.org, or at the DIA Box Office (313-833-4005).
Other activities include drop-in workshops, live music, guided tours, talks in the gallery by curators, and drawing in the galleries. Two special exhibitions are also on view: Annie Leibovitz: American Music (there is an extra charge for this exhibition) and The Big Three in Printmaking: Dürer, Rembrandt and Picasso. Activities are free with museum admission unless otherwise noted.
