Little Book Gets the Big Picture
Little Book Gets the Big Picture
Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals were a momentous undertaking, grand in concept and execution. Rivera considered it his greatest work; it has been used to represent the city of Detroit, and has become a signature image of this institution. While the newest book on the subject, Diego Rivera: Detroit Industry, a joint venture of the DIA and Scala Publishers, is small (not quite 5 by 7 inches), it provides an innovative approach to the frescos through horizontal and vertical fold-outs, ideal for capturing the size and scope of the murals. A lively text includes information on the artist and his technique; the patron, Edsel Ford; and a detailed analysis of the various panels that make up the fresco cycle.
The book, with fifty color illustrations as well as black-and-white archival pictures, is available in the Museum Shop for $9.95 ($8.95 for members). The volume makes a good last-minute holiday gift.
