Mosaic Youth Theatre at the DIA
Support live theatre this May and take in a performance of the Mosaic Youth Theatre’s production of City in a Strait at the DIA Auditorium. Noted playwright and University of Michigan writer-in-residence Charles Gordon, known as OyamO, wrote the play, about the triumphant and turbulent era of the civil rights movement, specifically for this internationally acclaimed group.
Engaging and thought provoking, City in a Strait follows a group of Detroit teenagers through the 1950s and ’60s. As the play unfolds, these friends find their lives changed forever by the opposing currents that are pulling the city apart. What they discover about themselves, and their city, could change the world. Whatever the future may hold, today as then, lies in the hands of Detroit’s youth.
Playwright OyamO received an MFA in playwriting from Yale University, and his works have been performed at the Yale Repertory Theatre, the Kennedy Center, the Goodman Theatre, and Theatre du Horla in Avignon, France, among others. OyamO has received fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations and, in 1999, won the prestigious Eric Kocher Playwrights Award forThe White Black Man.
Performances of City in a Strait are May 11 to May 12 and May 18 to May 20, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 4 p.m., in the museum auditorium, home of the Detroit Film Theatre.
