Overview

A Lady at Her Toilet (65.10) The European Paintings Council aims to cultivate greater interest in the Detroit Institute of Arts specifically through the museum’s renowned collection of European paintings.

The Council offers an annual series of programs that feature our permanent collection of European paintings thereby enabling members to learn more about various aspects of this encyclopedic collection. The programming features focused gallery tours, visits to the DIA’s conservation laboratory, and lectures by staff and guest scholars. The Council supports one free public lecture per year enabling us to bring a distinguished specialist of international repute to Detroit.

Travel organized by the Council serves two aims: short trips to other U.S. cities foster greater knowledge of the great collections elsewhere in this country, both public and private; trips to major international art markets that serve, in part, to cultivate private collectors and provide them with the requisite background to pursue collecting via reputable dealers or at auction.
