Spring AAW Trip to Newport and Providence, Rhode Island
June 17-20, 2010
Please mark your calendars and save the dates for our June 17-20, 2010 trip to historic Rhode Island. Highlights will include the Doris Duke Collection of eighteenth-century Newport furniture (including great examples of work by the famous Townsend and Goddard workshops); the Redwood Library (wonderful colonial portraits in one of the earliest surviving Greek Revival buildings in America); Kingscote (a landmark Gothic Revival summer home built in 1839, renovated and enlarged with a spectacular iridescent dining room by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1876); the Breakers (the grandest of the Gilded Age “cottages,” designed by Richard Morris Hunt for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893); a walking tour of Paradise and other seashore areas painted by Kensett, Whittredge, LaFarge, and other leading nineteenth-century American landscapists; and visits to several private collections.
