(France—2006—directed by Pascale Ferran)

Lady Constance Chatterley (Marina Hands) lives a privileged life on the estate of her husband’s family in Northern England, though all is not well; her husband’s war injuries have rendered him incapable of performing his marital duties. Soon, however, Constance finds herself mesmerized beyond reason by the sight of the estate’s ruggedly handsome gamekeeper (Jean-Louis Coulloc’h), and the passionate, delirious affair they embark upon is every bit as thrilling as it is dangerous. Winner of five Césars (France’s Oscar), including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress, Pascale Ferran’s extraordinary adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s classic novel is both faithful to the original material and cinematically audacious; it’s one of the year’s most erotic, engaging and visually rapturous experiences. Due to the film’s strong content, persons under 18 will not be admitted. (168 min.)

“Bracingly fresh and modern. Every frame is alive with a sensuality that is both wild and intelligent.” –A.O. Scott, The New York Times
