(USA/2007) Directed by Ben Niles)

Inspired by an article in the New York Times (“How Does a Piano Get to Carnegie Hall?”), filmmaker Ben Niles has fashioned this wonderfully entertaining and surprisingly moving documentary portrait of the creation of one specific Steinway concert grand, #L1037, which began on a factory floor in Queens and culminated – 12 months and 450 craftspeople later - in its arrival at Steinway Hall in mid-town Manhattan. In this era of super-mass production, Steinway’s gifted and dedicated employees are a dying breed: skilled cabinet-makers, tuners, intuitive hand-crafters, who, step-by-step, create instruments that have individual personalities, waiting to be brought to life at the hands of musicians who fall in love with them. This exquisite celebration reminds us how extraordinary the dialogue can be between an artist and an instrument – crafted by human hands but born of the materials of nature. (81 min.)

“A miracle. It ripples, it thunders, it sings. I couldn’t help thinking that Beethoven would have been pleased.”      -Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic
