(Austria/2007) Directed by Stefan Ruzowitsky

ACADEMY-AWARD WINNER - BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Austrian writer-director Stefan Ruzowitsky (The Inheritors) has turned a little-known, true-life story into one of the year’s most suspenseful and surprising adventures. Languishing in a Nazi concentration camp because he is a Jew, Salomon Sorowitsch (Karl Markovics) – a gifted artist as well as a black market forger – is suddenly summoned by the SS officer who arrested him, whereupon he’s told that he can escape death if he’ll use his considerable skills to take charge of a Nazi plan to flood England and America with counterfeit money. From that moment, Sorowitsch is launched into a tense and deadly battle of wits with the Nazis while struggling to keep himself and his unlikely crew of fellow prisoners alive in a world of terrifyingly arbitrary violence and sudden death. Though set during World War II, The Counterfeiters, like Melville’s great Army of Shadows before it, recalls the crime genre in its attention to detail, its characters’ desperate struggles with conscience, and its nail-biting suspense. (In German and Russian with English subtitles) (99 min.) Fri. and Sat. at 7:00; Sun. at 4:00 and 7:00
