(Argentina/Spain/2008/directed by Lucía Puenzo)

Adolescence invariably means having to confront an array of choices and life decisions, but few as monumental as the one facing 15 year-old Alex (Ines Efron,) who was born a hermaphrodite.  As Alex begins to explore her sexuality, her mother invites friends from Buenos Aires to come for a visit at their house on the magnificent Uruguayan shore, and they bring along their 16-year-old son Álvaro (Martin Piroyanski). Alex is immediately attracted to the young man, which adds another level of complexity to her search for identity, and forces both families to face their most disturbing fears. Grand Prize Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s prestigious Critics’ Week, Puenzo’s smashing directorial debut handles explosive material with extraordinary grace and tact, probing past the sensational to uncover the rich, emotional core of this story. (90 min.)

“A tough, engaging, extremely touching work of cinema.”  -Richard Havis, The Hollywood Reporter
