(Hong Kong/1994-2008/Directed by Wong Kar Wai)

Despite international success, the 1994 romantic martial arts epic Ashes of Time by director Wong Kar Wai (In the Mood for Love) was never released in the US. Now, after undergoing a full restoration and a major re-edit (including a new score featuring Yo Yo Ma), the director has reconceived the original – Wong’s only martial arts film – fashioning it into a visionary, virtually reborn adventure: Ashes of Time Redux. Set in ancient China, this is the visually splendid tale of a heartbroken swordsman (Leslie Cheung) who channels his burning passion for the woman who rejected him in a new direction when he hires a team of skilled swordsmen as contract bounty hunters. Shown to packed houses at this year’s Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals, Ashes of Time Redux is at last the timeless fable its director intended. (93 min.)

“Strikingly vivid and amazingly bold, both visually and structurally. Restored in a version that more than captures the super-forced color palette of the cinematography.” –Derek Elley, Variety, 2008
