(France/2008/Directed by Philippe Claudel)

For 15 years, Juliette (a superb Kristin Scott Thomas) has had virtually no contact with her family, for reasons that soon become shockingly apparent. Suddenly reunited with her younger sister (Elsa Zylberstein), yet still emotionally distanced by the terrible circumstances of their separation, the two women are faced with the daunting but all-important task of rebuilding emotional bridges that seem – at first glance – to be irreparably torn. Built elegantly and insightfully on the small, everyday events that come to define our lives and relationships, former teacher and first time writer-director Philippe Claudel has, in collaboration with his brilliant cast, fashioned one of the year’s most moving and richly human tales – a film that was a surprise hit at this year’s Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals. (117 min.)

“Utterly engrossing.”     -Derek Elley, Variety
