(Spain/2008—directed by Nacho Vigalondo)

Hector (Karra Elejalde) is relaxing outside his new home when he sees something that immediately engages his curiosity. When he decides to investigate, Hector embarks on a fantastic roller-coaster ride involving time travel, unexpected death, and, ultimately, the very paradox of human existence. Combining the great traditions of both classic science-fiction and film noir, writer-director Vigalondo has, with this heart-stoppingly smart debut film, created a brilliantly imaginative, deeply ironic and darkly funny vision of a universe askew – one that’s all the more impressive considering the minimal need for special effects, thanks instead to the hold-your-breath pacing, seamlessly worked-out plotting, and remarkably believable performances. For all who remember their sense of astonishment at the early Twilight Zone episodes, welcome back.

In Spanish with English subtitles. (88 min.)

“Absolutely fantastic… elegant, tight and brilliant, with no loose ends – a perfect film.” –Harry Knowles, Ain’t It Cool News
