(USA – 2009 – directed by Andrew Bujalski)

Jeannie and Lauren (real-life sisters Tilly and Maggie Hatcher) are temperamentally non-identical twins who live in a modest apartment in a slacker-rich section of Austin, Texas. Jeannie’s the co-owner of a vintage clothing store, and when her unhappy business partner sends her a threatening e-mail, Jeannie calls on her law student ex-boyfriend for help. From this modest plot grows the marvelously detailed Beeswax, an unpredictable, untraditional tale of families, friends and lovers, filled with performances so good – and so organic to their surroundings - that they cease to feel like performances, morphing instead into the memorably affecting center of the lived-in world the film creates. The third and best film from Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha), whom Mark Olsen of the L.A. Times calls “one of the finest, most deftly talented filmmakers currently working in America.” (100 min.)

“An ingenious comic structure. Beeswax, at first glance a modest, ragged slice of contemporary life, turns out to be a remarkably subtle, even elegant movie.” -A.O. Scott, The New York Times
