(South Korea/2009-directed by Bong Joon-ho)

With his first film since his 2006 international smash hit monster movie The Host, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho has fashioned a gripping, visually stylish thriller that is at once a murder mystery, a family drama, and an ingenious contemporary film noir. The mother of the title (played by the wonderful Kim Hye-ja) is convinced that her grown son – who has a slight mental disability – is innocent of the brutal murder of which he has been accused. When the police make it clear that they think it’s an open-and-shut case, it’s up to this fiercely protective mother to get her son out of jail and to prove his innocence. As in The Host, the dark dilemma at the core of the story is here combined with moments of explosive and unexpected humor; yet Mother never makes a false step as we progress toward the mystery’s solution – accompanied all the while by one of the most memorable screen mothers of all time. Cannes, Toronto and New York Festivals. In Korean with English subtitles. (129 min.)

“A superb murder mystery, with twists coming thick and fast and always at the right moment.” -The Hollywood Reporter
