(Czech Republic/2009—directed by Jan Hrebejk)

How does a man fall out of love with his wife? In the case of TV weather forecaster Oskar (Jiri Machacek) it happened in an instant; all it took was rolling over in bed and suddenly being repelled by the shape and size of her nose. In no time at all Oskar’s own oversized feature – his ego – spurs him on to a series of increasingly frantic affairs which at first he ingeniously tries to control by manipulating his on-air weather predictions. Ultimately, Oskar’s attempted flight from himself ends in an inevitable yet unexpectedly revealing appearance on his ex-wife’s call-in radio show. A comic yet seriously wise look at contemporary love, sex and marriage, Shameless – from the Oscar® nominated writer/director of Divided We Fall – is a brisk, sharply intelligent entertainment as well as an ironic vision of a self-absorbed modern man, eager to distance himself from the consequences of his actions. One of the sleeper hits of the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. In Czech with English subtitles. (88 min.)

“Slyly entertaining and clever… The relationships rollercoaster it depicts strikes a universal chord. As usual, Hrebejk proves a master of tone.” –Alissa Simon, Variety
