HARLAN – IN THE SHADOW OF JEW SÜSS

Sunday, August 22, 2010

(Germany/2009—directed by Felix Moeller)

Featuring rare archival footage, film clips and interviews, Harlan – In the Shadow of “Jew Süss” is a searing portrait of Veit Harlan, one of Nazi Germany’s most notorious filmmakers. Though forgotten today, millions across occupied Europe saw his perfidious, anti-Semitic propaganda film Jew Süss—required viewing for the SS. But this documentary also shows how Harlan’s family—especially the youngest generation—continues to struggle with the dark myth of his artistic immorality: a legacy marked by reckoning, denial and liberation. (99 min.)

“A fearfully fascinating, disturbing picture.” –Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic
