USA/2010—directed by Frederick Wiseman (91 min.)

America’s great documentarian Frederick Wiseman again embeds himself in an institution – in this case, Lord’s Boxing Gym in Austin, Texas – without a preconceived agenda. Wiseman’s preoccupation with training – seen earlier this year at the DFT in his La Danse, about the Paris Opera Ballet–– is also the primary emphasis in Boxing Gym. Not about blood or injury, Boxing Gym’s subject is the dance that takes place inside the ring and the methods practitioners use to attain discipline, speed and endurance. Gym owner Richard Lord treats his athletes like family, dispensing life lessons along with training tips. Unlike the macho atmosphere that often surrounds the boxing milieu, Lord’s Gym is a place where everyone is welcome, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. Only a few of Lord’s boxers dream of competing at the highest levels; most are there to happily strive for their personal best.

Boxing Gym goes the distance in its fascination with the discipline and balletic grace of athletes.” Rob Nelson, Variety
