(South Korea/2010—directed by Lee Chang-dong)

Mija (brought to life in a luminous performance by Yoon Jeong-hee), a proper, sixty-ish woman facing a difficult medical diagnosis, undergoes an unexpected and altogether remarkable transformation after enrolling in a poetry class. Living with her sullen, adolescent grandson, Mija is awaiting inspiration from her newly discovered artistic muses when she comes to a realization about the boy, and decides to take action. Elegantly paced and brilliantly acted, Poetry is a courageous, lyrical and intelligent portrait of a moral dilemma that suddenly becomes simple by virtue of a “moment of clarity.” Most of all, it’s an ode to the strength—and true dignity—that one indefatigable woman draws from her rich, untapped well of creativity. Best Screenplay Prize, Cannes Film Festival. In Korean with English subtitles. (139 min.)
