(Denmark/2009—directed by Mads Brügger)

Denmark launches an assault on North Korea in this must-be-seen-to-be-believed documentary that mischievously crosses The Colbert Report with Borat. Traveling to Pyongyang on a feigned mission of cultural exchange, Danish TV producer Mads Brügger brings along a Danish-Korean slapstick-comedy team called Red Chapel. The duo consists of Simon, who aims to perform an acoustic rendition of Oasis’s “Wonderwall,” and Jacob, whose mangled speech is incomprehensible to the security agents assigned to “assist” the troupe. While the duped host nation gets more than it bargained for, the Danish visitors likewise find their stunt isn’t as ethically clear-cut as they’d imagined. World Cinema Prize, Sundance Festival. In Danish and Korean with English subtitles. (87 min.)

“Shocking, funny and wildly outrageous!” Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times
