(USA/2009—directed by Carl Kurlander)

In this funny and insightful new documentary, successful screenwriter (St. Elmo’s Fire) and film instructor Carl Kurlander finds himself overcome with a most unusual mid-life crisis: he makes up his mind to flee life in sunny Hollywood and move back to his hometown of Pittsburgh – taking his less-than-enthusiastic family with him. Hoping to find out if the once-great industrial giant can reinvent and redefine itself for a new era, Kurlander touches on many of the same issues that face us in Detroit – and so many other distressed industrial cities – as he thoughtfully and honestly asks “can it ever be too late to come back?” Director Carl Kurlander in person! (85 min.)

“Wry and funny… he reminds us that our cities are the real “Real America.” –Howard Fineman, Newsweek
