(Japan/2009—directed by Takashi Miike)
Cult director Takeshi Miike (revered by fans for Ichi the Killer and Audition) delivers a bravado period action film and a knockout – and non-stop – example of pure cinematic exhilaration. Set at the end of Japan's feudal era, 13 Assassins tells of a group of unemployed samurai enlisted to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne, which would undoubtedly plunge the country into a bitterly war-torn future. Beautifully made and visually stunning (as well as graphically explicit in its scenes of combat, which include an astounding 45-minute climactic battle sequence), 13 Assassins is a richly satisfying genre piece, sure to become a modern classic of its genre. (126 min.)
“Dazzling and dizzyingly over-the-top… it gains momentum of startling inevitability.” –Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times

"A Critics' Pick! Stirring and unexpectedly moving." -Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
