WORLD ON A WIRE (new digital restoration)

Friday, November 18, 2011 – Sunday, November 20, 2011

 Detroit Film Theatre

(Germany/1973–directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder)

Never before seen at the DFT, this revelatory, dystopic science-fiction epic is the late German wunderkind Rainer Werner Fassbinder's gloriously cracked, boundlessly inventive take on future paranoia. With dashes of Kubrick, Vonnegut and Philip K. Dick – yet casting a unique spell of his own – Fassbinder tells the sprawling, noir-ish tale of a reluctant action hero: a cybernetics engineer who uncovers a massive corporate and governmental conspiracy that threatens our entire notion of reality, thereby anticipating both Blade Runner and The Matrix in the process. This rarely-screened, three-and-a-half-hour labyrinth is a satiric and surreal '70s-style look at the world of tomorrow from one of the cinema's truly kinky and most brilliantly original geniuses. A new digital restoration, in German with English subtitles.  (212 min.)

"Nothing short of breathtaking." –A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"Brilliantly sardonic... even more timely now than when it was made." The New Yorker

"★★★★★! The discovery of the season." Time Out New York
