(USA/2010—directed by Mike Woolf)

Best known as the father of Massive Multiplayer Online role-playing Games (MMORGs) like Ultima and Tabula Rasa, Richard Garriott always wanted to follow in the trail-blazing footsteps of his astronaut father Owen Garriott, one of the first scientist-astronauts, who flew a mission on Skylab in the 1970s. But when Richard’s near-sightedness made a career at NASA impossible, he turned to private space travel aboard the Russian Soyuz to make his lifelong dream a reality. Man On A Mission captures everything from Garriott’s training in Russia’s cosmonaut center – the recently declassified Star City – which included intense water rescue training in the Black Sea as well as leaning to speak the Russian language. Stunning NASA footage lets us experience Garriott’s launch aboard the Soyuz spacecraft from a remote base in Kazakhstan, life aboard the International Space Station, and his capsule’s dangerous, fiery re-entry to Earth. All the while, Richard’s supportive father quietly grapples with the new reality of his son being a teammate of his former fierce Cold War competitors. Audience Award for Best Documentary, South by Southwest Festival. In English and Russian with English subtitles. (83 min.)

“Exquisite and genuinely awe-inspiring. A thrilling wonder for anyone who ever fantasized about being an astronaut.” Marc Savlov, The Austin Chronicle
