(USA/2011—directed by Bob Hercules)

Narrated by Mandy Patinkin, Mavericks of American Dance documents how the Joffrey revolutionized ballet, and became the first uniquely American company, by combining modern dance with traditional ballet and setting it to contemporary scores. Showing the full history of the Company from its founding in 1956 to the present, Mavericks of American Dance describes how the Joffrey resurrected itself after devastating setbacks, and introduced cutting-edge choreographers such as Leonide Massine and Twyla Tharp to larger audiences.
