Friday, November 09, 2012 – Sunday, November 11, 2012

 Detroit Film Theatre

(USA/2012—directed by Matthew Akers)

Seductive, fearless and outrageous, Marina Abramovic has been redefining what art is for nearly forty years. Using her own body as a vehicle, pushing herself beyond her physical and mental limits––and at times risking her life in the process––she creates performances that challenge, shock, and move us. Through her and with her, boundaries are crossed, consciousness expanded, and art as we know it is reborn. She is, quite simply, one of the most compelling artists of our time. He is also a glamorous art-world icon, a lightning rod for controversy, a myth of her own making, and unlike anyone you have ever met before. This feature documentary takes us inside her world as she prepares for her most important moment to date: a major retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. It’s the chance to answer the question she’s been confronted with for four decades: “Why is this art?” Berlin Film Festival Audience Award. (106 min.)

“Easily the best documentary of the Sundance Film Festival, it’s also a contender for best doc of 2012.” Jesse Hawthorne, San Francisco Bay Guardian

“Breathtaking… Extraordinary. The movie’s power as a potent art high is damned near peerless.” David Fear, Time Out New York

“A moving and masterfully constructed exploration of what makes art – or anything else – worth doing in the first place.” Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com
