ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA

(Turkey/2011—directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan)
Winner of the Grand Prize
at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Turkish director Nuri Ceylan’s newest film
opens in the dead of night as a group of men–among them, a police commissioner,
a prosecutor, a doctor and a murder suspect–drive through the Anatolian
countryside, the serpentine roads and rolling hills lit only by the headlights
of their cars. They are searching for the burial site of a murdered man. The
suspect, who claims he was drunk during the crime, is repeatedly wrong about
where he buried the body. As the night–and the investigation–wears on, far
more is revealed than simply the burial site of a corpse. In this corner of the
world, nothing is what it seems; and only when a discovery is finally made do
the real questions begin. Impeccably photographed and tantalizingly
suspenseful, Ceylan’s film was a surprise hit at the New York and Toronto Film
Festivals. In Turkish with English subtitles. (157 min.)
