(Canada/2012—directed by Kim Nguyen)

Winner of the Best Picture and Best Actress Awards at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, War Witch (Rebelle) is the gripping and ultimately deeply moving tale of two children, forcibly conscripted into a rebel army in an unnamed African country. A richly imagined character study that unfolds in the manner of a magical realist fable, and told from the children’s point-of-view, the unforgettable and vitally important War Witch is the fourth feature film from Kim Nguyen, a Montreal-based filmmaker of Vietnamese descent. While unnamed in the film, the actual filming location was the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the long road to the film’s completion could be the subject of a film all by itself. Yet the difficulties of the movie’s creation quickly vanish as we’re immediately and fully immersed in a rich and bravura example of storytelling on an utterly human scale. War Witch contains disturbing imagery and themes, and is not recommended for persons under 17. Academy Award® Nominee, Best Foreign Language Film 2013. In French and Lingala with English subtitles. (90 min.)
