(Denmark/2012—directed by Thomas Vinterberg)

From acclaimed director Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration) and co-writer Tobias Lindholm (A Hijacking), The Hunt is a disturbing and gripping depiction of how a lie becomes the truth when gossip, doubt and malice are allowed to ignite a witch-hunt. The wonderfully versatile Mads Mikkelsen won the Best Actor Award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival for his penetrating portrayal of Lucas, a beloved kindergarten aide and father in the midst of reinventing his life, following a tough divorce. Just as things are starting to go his way, Lucas’s world explodes into unimaginable chaos when an untruthful remark turns his neighbors in his small, tightly-knight community into something resembling a mob. As the lie refuses to die – despite facts that prove otherwise - Lucas refuses to flee, choosing instead to mount a lonely campaign to reclaim his life and dignity. With echoes of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, The Hunt is stirring proof that even the oldest of stories can find vibrant new life in the hands of artists. Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. In Danish with English subtitles. (111 min.)
