(Japan/1986—directed by Hayao Miyazaki)

An early masterpiece of storytelling from the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, whose stunningly imaginative and ornately detailed vision presaged his later classics such as Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. The mysterious and beautiful adventure of Laputa – based on the work of Jonathan Swift – begins when Sheeta, a young girl with a mysterious crystal pendant, floats down friom the sky and into the arms and life of young a young engineer’s apprentice, Pazu. Together they embark upon a search for the legendary floating castle in the sky, Laputa, supposedly the home of a long-disappeared civilization promising enormous wealth and power to those who can unlock its secrets. Ultimately, this Atlantis-in-the-air is revealed as a world where technology and ecology have fallen out of balance, and it’s up to our young protagonists to learn the truth about Laputa, and about each other. Packed with adventure and visual wonders, this rare 35mm print of Laputa: Castle in the Sky reveals Miyazaki’s richly textured, visually imaginative universe in in all its big-screen glory. With the voices of Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman and Mark Hamill. (124 min.)
