3:00 PM Detroit Film Theatre

(Japan/1989—directed by Hayao Miyazaki)
From the legendary Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro) comes the beloved story of a resourceful young witch who uses her broom to create a high-flying delivery service, embarking upon her first experience with independence and responsibility as she gradually finds her place in the world. As we discover, it is tradition for all young witches to leave their families on the night of a full moon and set out to learn their craft. When that night comes for Kiki, she embarks on her life journey with her chatty black cat, Jiji, landing the next morning in a sea-side village where a bakery owner hires her to make her first deliveries. Rarely has the animator’s art been so brilliantly rendered as in this delightfully imaginative film – a beautiful and timeless story of a young girl finding her way in life as she learns to overcome self-doubt while living a magical adventure. In English, featuring the voices of Kirsten Dunst, Janeane Garofalo, Debbie Reynolds and Phil Hartman. (102 min.)

“Breathtaking… a highly original, thoroughly delightful tale.” -Ken Eisner, Variety
