9:30 PM Detroit Film Theatre

(USA/2013–directed by Seth Kramer, Daniel Miller and Jeremy Newberger)

Before reality morphed into a TV genre, the viewing masses fixated on a single, possibly sociopathic star: controversial talk-show host Morton Downey, Jr. In the late ‘80s, Downey tore apart the traditional talk format by turning debate of current issues into a gladiator pit. His blow-smoke-in-your-face style (Downey’s on-and-off chain-smoking took its toll in a hurry) drew a rabid cult following, but also the title “Father of Trash Television.” This raucous, eye-opening documentary dissects the mind and motivation of television’s most notorious agitator. Tribeca Film Festival, Official Selection.
Évocateur director Daniel Miller will be present at the Saturday 9:30pm screening to discuss the film with audience members. (90 min.)
“A fascinating look at an almost frighteningly charismatic figure.” –Kyle Smith, New York Post
