(Germany/2010—directed by Baran bo Odar)

Exactly 23 years after the unsolved murder of a child, another 13-year-old is missing. Her bicycle is found abandoned in the same spot as the first girl’s, leading police to suspect that after a long hiatus, the same killer may be at work again. In his strikingly commanding debut feature, writer and director Baran bo Odar adapts Jan Costin Wagner’s novel about two detectives desperately trying to solve these parallel crimes, while reaching out for help from the retired investigator who is still haunted by the original unresolved case. Gripping performances by Ulrich Thomsen (In a Better World, The Celebration), Katrin Sass (Good Bye, Lenin!) and Burghart Klaussner (The White Ribbon) enrich this intense, edge-of-your-seat psychological drama far beyond the crime genre. In German with English subtitles. (119 min.)

“Four stars! A first-rate thriller.” –David Fear, Time Out New York

“An exemplary German-language thriller, complex and disturbing.” –Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
