(Japan/2001–directed by Rintaro)

This visually stunning and thematically bold triumph of Japanese anime follows the Evil Duke Red and his plan to rule the world from his tower called Ziggurat. He has a robot in development, which he wants to use to control all the machines in the world, but a detective and his nephew arrive on the case and plan to foil his plot. The story spirals around many interlaced characters as the director weaves the viewer through a lush and richly populated animated landscape that becomes increasingly hallucinatory and psychologically unsettling. Based on the celebrated comic book by Osamu Tezuka. (107 min.)

"If you have never seen a Japanese anime, start here." –Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
