(USA/1999–directed by Brad Bird)

When a nine-year-old boy named Hogarth makes friends with an innocent alien giant robot, it's up to the boy to protect his gentle new friend from sinister military forces. Set in the 1950s, and ingeniously evoking that era's Cold War atmosphere of mistrust and fear of science, The Iron Giant is based upon the 1968 story "Iron Man" by British poet laureate Ted Hughes. A work of classically drawn, beautifully expressive animation, The Iron Giant was the first big-screen feature from director Brad Bird, who would go on to direct two of Pixar's most beloved classics, The Incredibles and Ratatouille. (86 min.)
