Going East on Michigan Avenue from Westland to Downtown Detroit

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts, Artangel, and Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art present the Mobile Homestead videos, part of Mike Kelley’s last major project, a public commission for his native city of Detroit based on a full-sized replica of his childhood suburban home. The videos document the 2010 journey of Mobile Homestead from downtown Detroit to Kelley's former home in Westland and back again. Kelley presents this expedition alongside interviews with an array of local residents, workers, and business owners along the way, including a motorcycle gang, strip-club dancers, church officials, social service providers, and representatives of the automobile industry to which the Motor City owes its name. The two documentaries of Mobile Homestead en route trace a remarkable variety of both urban and outlying areas of Detroit, revealing the socio-economic disparities among the communities through which Mobile Homestead passed. This program is free to the public.
