(Japan/2009—directed by Takashi Miike)
Cult director Takashi Miike, revered by fans for such dark classics as Ichi the Killer and Audition, delivers a bravura period action film and a sustained, knockout display of pure cinematic exhilaration. Set near the end of the feudal era, 13 Assassins is the story of a group of unemployed samurai – the “downsized” of their day – recruited to bring down a sadistic lord and prevent him from ascending to the throne, which would surely plunge the country into a bitter, war-saturated future. Beautifully crafted and highly explicit, including an astounding 45-minute battle sequence, 13 Assassins is a richly satisfying genre piece and an unforgettable big-screen experience. In Japanese with English subtitles. (126 min.)
“Dazzling and dizzyingly over the top.” –Los Angeles Times
