Before lawyer Raphael Lemkin became a human-rights advocate there wasn't such a word as “genocide.” And while his term in nothing to celebrate, it has given a name to one of the most vexing crimes against humanity. Partially inspired by Samantha Power's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, A Problem From Hell, Edet Belzberg's documentary chronicles Lemkin's quest for global justice and the end of ethnic cleansing while bringing attention to a quartet of courageous fellow activists, including Emmanuel Uwurukundo, who survived the ethnic killings in Rwanda and now oversees refugee camps for those fleeing the violence in Darfur, and 90-year-old Ben Ferencz who was a prosecutor at Nuremberg. Ten years in the making and assembled from over 800 hours of footage, this moving film won the U. S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Use of Animation and Editing Award at this year's Sundance Film festival. (115 min.)
