7:00 PM Detroit Film Theatre

(China/Canada/2016—directed by Johnny Ma)

When a drunken passenger causes a Chinese taxi driver (a knockout performance by Chen Gang) to swerve and hit a motorcyclist, the driver stops to help the injured man. But when no police or ambulance arrive, he drives the victim to the hospital himself, which is when his true nightmares really begin. Johnny Ma’s thrilling debut feature, a Kafkaesque nightmare where no good deed goes unpunished, veers quickly from gritty social drama to suspenseful film noir as it follows the repercussions of one car accident in a society where life is cheap and compassion is ruinously expensive. Decency collides disastrously with bureaucracy in one of the year’s tightest, most unnerving and utterly riveting thrillers. In Mandarin with English subtitles. (80 minutes)

“A stunningly assured, darkly gripping first feature.” –Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times
