(France/Germany/2016—directed by François Ozon)

Set in the immediate aftermath of the First World War, Frantz recalls the mourning period that follows great national tragedies as seen through the eyes of the war’s “lost generation.” Directed by France’s gifted and unpredictable François Ozon (Swimming Pool, The New Girlfriend), Frantz is a surprising, stately exploration of characters wrestling with their conflicting feelings—survivor’s guilt, anger at one’s losses, the overriding desire for happiness despite everything that has come before, and the longing for sexual, romantic and familial attachments—but with the delicate shadings that Ozon has made his trademark. (113 min.)

“A NYT Critics’ Pick! Lyrically seductive.” –Stephen Holden, The New York Times
