Cinetopia Film Festival: ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (extended director’s cut)

Sunday, June 11, 2017

1:00 PM

(Italy/USA/1984--directed by Sergio Leone)

Where to begin when describing Sergio Leone’s uncompromisingly operatic portrait of four decades in the lives of a group of New York gangsters, and their love-hate relationship with the American Dream? Leone’s massively ambitious project premiered at Cannes in a 3 hour, 47-minute version, which was subsequently cut (and rendered incoherent) by the removal of 90 minutes of footage for its brief U.S. release. Though later restored to the Cannes version and made available in a few American art houses (including the DFT) and on home video, the film that Leone originally envisioned—running 4 hours and 15 minutes—was ultimately re-assembled and preserved in 2012, using the original 35mm camera negative to create a frame-by-frame, 4K digital restoration with full color correction, thanks to the efforts of Cineteca di Bologna, The Film Foundation and others. Experiencing Leone’s dream project on the big screen will be an incomparable and perhaps once-in a-lifetime—cinematic event. With Robert De Niro, James Woods, Tuesday Weld, Joe Pesci and Elizabeth McGovern, and the masterful score by Ennio Morricone. Presented with one intermission. (255 min.)

Festival passes are now on sale. Individual tickets will be available May 9 at the festival website.

Cineteca di Bologna, one of Europe’s most renowned archives for film restoration and preservation, organizes the world-renowned festival Il Cinema Ritrovato every summer, where thousands view classic films at outdoor screenings in Bologna's Piazza Maggiore. A special touring program of rare, previously endangered, newly-restored classic films will be presented during this year’s Cinetopia Festival, from June 8th through June 11th, exclusively at the DIA’s Detroit Film Theatre. This series is curated by Guy Borlée of Cineteca di Bologna and Elliot Wilhelm of the Detroit Film Theatre, in collaboration with The Italian Consulate in Detroit .
