(Iran/2016—directed by Mehrdad Oskouei)

The lives of teenage girls sharing quarters at a juvenile detention center on the outskirts of Tehran are the focus of this eloquent, extraordinary documentary. Director Mehrdad Oskouei spent seven years securing access to this all-female facility. As the New Year approaches, the young inmates bond, and reveal—with disarming and startling honesty—the circumstances and acts that resulted in their incarceration, including one who killed her father, one who robbed a bank, and one found with 651 grams of cocaine. Outside the prison walls, danger is everywhere, often – most alarmingly – within their own families. Starless Dreams delivers an unforgettable portrayal of innocence lost and found, distinguished by the emotional precision associated with the best of Iranian cinema. (76 min.)

“Oskouei is one of Iran’s finest documentary filmmakers. Starless Dreams is the perfect example of how powerful simplicity can be, when it’s underpinned by compassion.” –Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter
