Winner of the 2013 National Book Award for Fiction, James McBride's novel tells the story of abolitionist John Brown. Artist Jacob Lawrence also tells Brown's story in a powerful print series that is a centerpiece of the DIA's General Motors Center for African American Art Collection. DIA Staff will introduce participants to the collection and discuss how Lawrence came to choose and depict Brown's dramatic story.
The program is free with museum admission and free to residents of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties. Pre-registration is required. To register, call the box office at 313-833-4005 or register online.
The DIA encourages libraries in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties to use the DIA’s discussion guide for their own book groups and invite a DIA representative to their institution to talk about related works of art in the museum collection. For more information or to request a copy of the discussion guide, please call 313-833-6448.
