Late Mamluk Carpets: Some New Observations

Mamluk carpets, admired for their kaleidoscopic abstract patterns, are something of a mystery, emerging apparently out of nowhere in the late fifteenth century. Various lines of evidence, including representations of carpets in European paintings, suggest that their source was a little-known earlier tradition introduced to Egypt by weavers brought from elsewhere.
