Michael Leja

Professor of Art History and Director of the Visual Studies Program, University of Pennsylvania

As a young man, Winslow Homer was a successful designer of illustrations for the equally young pictorial press of the 1860s. Leja discusses the ways Homers early experiences as a draftsman shaped his mature work as a painter.
