Discovering Islamic Art in Khedivial Cairo: Some Early Collections and their Displays
Friday, April 24, 2009 |6:30 PM
Dr. Mercedes Volait, Director of Research at the CNRS, Paris, and Director of the IN VISU Research Unit, Institut National d‘Histoire de l‘Art, Paris
Mercedes Volait will bring to life the impressive Islamic art collections assembled by French collectors in Egypt in the 1860-70s, and subsequent initiatives by local amateurs. She will discuss, in particular, the importance of salvaged architectural elements amongst these collections of objects, and their exhibition. These collections shed new light on 19th-century Egyptian and European attitudes toward Islamic art.
