Matthew Barney in person with THE CREMASTER CYCLE
Wednesdays, September 15, 22 & 29 |7:00 PM
Matthew Barney's The Cremaster Cycle will have a rare complete showing – in the sequence in which the films were made – beginning on September 15th for three consecutive Wednesdays.
The five films of The Cremaster Cycle span genres and locales from a football stadium to a musical revue to a lyric opera in Budapest, encompassing a gothic Western, the Masonic secrets of the Chrysler Tower, and a motorcycle race. Each film comprises a completely realized work in itself, however, seen together and in chronological sequence, they travel from west to east to trace a metaphorical path toward fully developed form. It is a rare opportunity to see the Cycle in theaters on 35mm film.
On September 15th at 7:00 p.m., Matthew Barney will introduce Cremaster Part Four and Cremaster Part One.
Cremaster Parts 2 and 5 will screen on September 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
Cremaster Part 3 will close the Cycle on September 29th at 7:00 p.m.
Barney,
who is also a sculptor and performance artist, will introduce The Cremaster
Cycle before the Sept. 15 showing of Cremaster Part 4 and
Cremaster Part 1. A cocktail reception with the artist will be held at 6
p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets for the reception are $125, and proceeds
benefit DIA auxiliaries Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art (FMCA) and Friends of
the Detroit Film Theatre. A part of the reception ticket is tax deductible. To
