SISTER

Friday, January 18, 2013 – Sunday, January 27, 2013

(Switzerland/2012–directed by Ursula Meier)

Twelve-year-old Simon (Kacey Mottet Klein) lives with his older sister, Louise (Léa Seydoux of Farewell, My Queen) near a luxury Swiss ski resort. Taking on the responsibility of providing for the two of them – since Louise can’t seem to hold on to a job – Simon finds ways to eke out a living from the rich tourists in the area, but when he partners with a crooked British seasonal worker, his life takes an unexpectedly dangerous turn.  Reminiscent of the great films by Belgium’s Dardenne brothers (L’Enfant, The Kid With a Bike), as well as the insightful portraits of youth by François Truffaut (The 400 Blows), Ursula Meier steers her complex, intimate and heart-wrenching tale of siblings in the throes of a moral awakening with a sure and elegant directorial hand. One of the year’s most moving films features crystalline cinematography by the extraordinary Agnès Godard (Beau Travail, The Dreamlife of Angels). Special Silver Prize Winner, 2012 Berlin Film Festival. Official Swiss submission, 2013 Academy Awards. (97 min.)

“Quietly devastating, beautiful and universal… shun anyone who spoils this movie for you.” –Mary Pols, Time
