Violinist and Young Woman (70.167) — Edgar Degas

(USA/2012—directed by Jay Bulger)

At home with rock ‘n’ roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary red-haired, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, scary and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story, intercut with footage of his continent-hopping life, from London to L.A., Nigeria (where he looked down the barrel of an officer’s machine gun), Italy, South Africa, and way beyond.  Baker may have broken the mold musically, but his dyspeptic mood swings, fueled by multi-decade addictions, went a long way toward making him persona non grata even among the music greats who to this day revere his work. Eric Clapton, Charlie Watts, Johnny Rotten, Max Weinberg, Carlos Santana and Marky Ramone, as well as Baker’s 4 wives and 3 grown children, all have something to say about him, including: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” and “he’s consistently horrible.” Beware of Mr. Baker catapults the viewer into his beat – with every smash of the drum is a man behind it smashing his way through life. Jury Prize, SXSW. (92 min.)

“Critics pick! Makes a persuasive argument that Baker was the greatest of all rock drummers.” A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“Five stars! Rudely funny… a sly testament to Baker’s musicianship.” Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
“An incredible new documentary.” Any Greene, Rolling Stone
“Fascinating and startlingly candid!” –Joe Leydon, Variety
