Gallery Tour: Impressionist Paintings, French and American
Saturday, February 01, 2014 |10:00 AM
Begun in France, the impressionist movement dominated the western art world—in France and beyond—throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. The DIA’s impressionist painting collection is exceptional, and allows a full assessment of this fertile period from both sides of the Atlantic. While the number of works is not comparable to the Metropolitan (New York)’s or Art Institute (Chicago)’s collections, the DIA’s select group of canvases illustrate the inspirations of French impressionist painters and the adoption of their ideas by American artists.
